Campeonato Estatal Escaramuzas | Rancho La Mangana, GA | Event Photography

Escaramuza Charra is the women's event of charreria, Mexico's national sport, and is a beautiful celebration of culture, tradition, and horsemanship. Teams of eight women ride sidesaddle in synchronized formations that have been passed down through generations, preserving an important part of Mexico's heritage. One of the most recognizable maneuvers is La Escalera (The Ladder), where the riders create a ladder like formation while showcasing the teamwork and dedication behind the sport. Out of all the formations, La Escalera was my personal favorite to photograph because of the precision and beauty of seeing it come together in the arena.

The Meaning Behind the Dresses and Details

One of the most amazing parts of Escaramuzas is the traditional attire. The dresses are inspired by the Adelitas of the Mexican Revolution and represent strength, pride, and heritage. From the colorful fabrics and embroidery to the coordinated ribbons, sombreros, and horse tack, every detail is carefully chosen. The rider’s appearance is an important part of the tradition and helps preserve the cultural roots that make Escaramuzas so special.
