What Is a Charreada? Mexico's Traditional Equestrian Sport

A Charreada is Mexico's national equestrian sport and a celebration of horsemanship, tradition, and community. Throughout the day, participants compete in a variety of events that showcase their riding skills and teamwork with their horses. One of the most recognizable events is the coleadero, where riders attempt to bring down a running steer by its tail. Many charreadas also begin with a desfile, a parade of riders and participants dressed in traditional charro attire. Beyond the competitions, the event is filled with culture, from beautifully embroidered dresses and charro suits (check out this blog for some of the outfits I photographed) to music, family gatherings, and a shared appreciation for the traditions that have been passed down through generations.
